Quincy symposium to focus on inclusion

The Patriot Ledger - 12/3/2018

Dec. 03--QUINCY -- An annual workshop for Quincy agencies and local nonprofits will focus on inclusion strategies to better support people with emotional, social and developmental disabilities.

The 15th annual Quincy Community Development Symposium will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Library Main Branch, 40 Washington St. This year's conference will feature a workshop and training by Lisa Drennan of MERGE Consulting.

Drennan will guide participants as they explore techniques, strategies and philosophies that promote an inclusive culture for their organization to better support people with diverse abilities at all levels including program participation and volunteer and employment opportunities.

"We are bringing the community together and talking about how important this is and the value and benefits of community inclusion. This is everybody's responsibility, not just the responsibility of organizations geared toward working with people with disabilities," she said.

Drennan said she will teach people how to break down barriers and provide strategies and philosophies on how to work with this population.

The symposium is organized by the city's department of planning and community development. Each year the symposium focuses on a different topic relevant to the agencies that work together in Quincy.

"It's about what individual agencies can do to improve their capacity, but also how communities can work together and collaborate to improve out comes," Melissa Horr Pond of the planning department said.

About two-thirds of the tickets have been sold. Tickets are available for free on Eventbrite.
