EDITORIAL: Veterans nursing home moves step closer to reality

Treasure Coast Newspapers (Stuart, FL) - 9/20/2014

Sept. 20--BUILD IT -- We're grateful to Col. Mike Prendergast for his support for St. Lucie County as the future home of a new Veterans Affairs nursing home for the state of Florida.

Prendergast, executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, recently wrote to Gov. Rick Scott and the three members of the state Cabinet, urging them to approve the seventh VA nursing home in the state to be built on a 28.5-acre donated site in the Tradition community of Port St. Lucie. The vote on the site is scheduled for next week.

In July, the site received the top ranking from a VA site selection committee. A vote was delayed last month after a legislator questioned that ranking.

The letter by Prendergast would seem to bring the St. Lucie site closer to reality.

St. Lucie County Commissioner Tod Mowery said, "We are thrilled that Col. Prendergast has made this recommendation for our nursing facility to move forward."

If approved next week, the home would serve veterans in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River, Okeechobee, and Highlands counties, and portions of Palm Beach, Brevard, Glades, Polk, Hendry and Osceola counties.
