BRIEF: Va. Beach, Chesapeake school divisions investigated

Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - 10/1/2014

Oct. 01--The Virginia Beach and Chesapeake public school divisions are under federal investigation for allegations of discrimination, according to a U.S. Department of Education spokesperson.

The department's Office for Civil Rights is investigating three Virginia Beach cases to determine whether the division discriminated against students with disabilities.

The department is investigating one Chesapeake case to determine whether the division discriminates against African American students with respect to access to college and career-ready programs and courses.

The Pilot reported Saturday that a yearlong federal investigation found Norfolk Public Schools negligent in handling complaints about sexual harassment and treatment of students with disabilities.
