Monroe County nursing home gets 60 televisions

March 31--Some 60 Pleasant Valley Manor nursing home residents will be able to watch their favorite series or game show from the comfort of their beds, thanks to the generosity of about 70 individuals and organization.
Blue Ridge Cable channel 13 picked up the flat screens from Walmart in Mount Pocono -- which provided a 10 percent discount -- and delivered them to the Snydersville home on Monday. Blue Ridge also donated $300 to the effort and state Sen. Mario Scavello, R-40, made a personal donation of $1,400.
All this was in addition to $2,900 raised through 66 individual donations on a "GoFundMe.com "website launched by the non-profit nursing home's account manager, Jeff Rinker. All told, nearly $7,000 has been raised.
"The fund will continue for the time being," Rinker said. "Any additional money collected will be used for more TVs or mounting hardware which may be necessary for any special needs resident who may receive a TV."
Most of Pleasant Valley Manor's 174 residents --who require 24-hour care -- receive state Medical Assistance benefits to help pay for their stays. Nursing home costs exceed $8,000 per month, per person.
"We are working on a survey of residents without TVs," Rinker said. "These will be the first to receive a set. Next to be replaced would be TVs located in such a way the resident has trouble viewing due to physical limitations."
Those who already have TVs, but with poor reception or other functional issues, would be the next in line to receive the LED flat screens.
Rinker estimates the 60 sets delivered Monday will be distributed within two weeks.
