Medicare signups begin Oct. 15

Oct. 02--Heads-up, seniors. For those on Medicare, this month can be critical.

It's the official start of a once-a-year window when seniors can switch their Part C (hospital/medical care) and Part D (prescription drug) plans. Those who ignore the open enrollment season, which runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, could wind up paying hundreds of dollars in unnecessary prescription drug charges next year, especially as some drug prices have soared in recent months, say Medicare experts.

Not everyone needs to change their Medicare plan, but experts say it pays to review your current plan, especially for prescription drug coverage. Here are places to start:

Medicare can be very confusing, especially for newcomers. The good news is there's a wealth of free Medicare information that can help you sort out multiple Medicare benefit options that are offered, plus the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

To help you understand how Medicare works, which options are available, and how to apply, ask for free Medicare information by mail, or find free Medicare information in online publications you can download.

Here's how to find free Medicare information:

--Log on to "Medicare.gov," the official government website for Medicare.

--Go to the "Medicarepublications.gov" website to view or download current free Medicare publications.

--Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to order free Medicare publications, and they will be mailed to you. You can expect to receive them within 3 weeks.
