Seahawks savor chance to give back

Star-News - 4/8/2017

April 08--Saturdays are meant for soccer, according to Julio Moncada. Just not the soccer you'd normally think of.

In the offseason, members of the UNCW men's soccer program spend the weekend with the Wilmington chapter of TOPSoccer, a program run by US Youth Soccer Program that helps kids with disabilities take part in the sport. After hours on the pitch practicing and playing during the week, Saturdays remind the Seahawk players what the game is all about.

"I think that's a big part of volunteering -- enjoying what you're doing. It's an honor to help them," Moncada said.

Being part of those Saturdays makes this Saturday even more special.

The fifth annual Harry's Game has become a tradition for the UNCW program. The game, which is named after coach Aidan Heaney's son, helps spread awareness about people with learning disabilities while raising money for three programs that help people with those disabilities -- TOPSoccer, ABLE to WORK and the Special Olympics of New Hanover.

Over the years, UNCW has faced all four ACC schools within the state, going 1-0-3 in the games. The Seahawks host national runner-up Wake Forest at 6 p.m. It's the second straight season the two teams have squared off.

"Every year, it's one of the highlights of our season," Heaney said. "It means a lot to me and my family, but for our community too, we've got a really cool thing going and the support's been great."

The opportunity to give back while playing against quality competition is something players have come to look forward to. And the Seahawks are always happy to see the rewards of their work.

UNCW sophomore Ryan Cretens understands just how important programs like the ones that benefit from the fundraiser are. His older brother, Tyler, was also born with intellectual disabilities.

Spending time with the TOPSoccer athletes is always fun. That includes a pregame soccer clinic on Saturday. Having the opportunity to help the program while playing the game players love is an added bonus.

"It's a great reward to see all the kids having a great time just kicking the ball around with us. It doesn't get any better than that," Cretens said. "It's just one of those moments when you feel good, it makes your heart feel good." -- Reporter Alex Riley can be reached at 910-343-2034 or Alex.Riley@StarNewsOnline.com.
