Fort Smith Planning Commission to consider ALDI expansion, nursing home, restaurant

Dec. 12--A new Mexican restaurant, a nursing home and a grocery store expansion are all up for Fort Smith Planning Commission consideration today.

ALDI Inc., a chain of discount grocery stores, is looking to add 2,124 square-feet to its store at 8400 Phoenix Ave. in Fort Smith, according to Planning Commission documents.

The expansion is for more space and more product, Sam Malinowsky of SM Engineering said by phone. If the expansion is approved, ALDI would begin construction early next year and be finished around May. The store would have to temporarily shut down for about four weeks near the end of construction.

A new ALDI store opened in October in Van Buren.

The Planning Commission will also consider the development of a nursing home at 9000 U.S. 71 in Fort Smith. The propsoed nursing home will be 62,000-square-feet with 179 parking spaces.

A new restaurant could also pop up at 8655 S. Zero St.The Planning Commission will decide today whether to allow the construction of a 3,819-square-foot restaurant with a 338-square-foot outdoor dining area. Ron Brixey of Brixey Engineering and Land Surveying Inc. said by phone that the proposed restaurant is a Mexican restaurant.

The Planning Commission meeting will be 5:30 p.m. today at Creekmore Park Community Center, 3301 S. M St. Items approved by the Planning Commission must be approved by the city's Board of Directors before they are final.
