Spanish honor students aid elderly gardeners

HENNIKER ? Students in the Spanish Honor Society at John Stark Regional High School teamed up with the Henniker Rotary for their third annual Rush Square Planting Day on May 20.

Rush Square is an affordable housing community composed entirely of one-bedroom units serving the elderly and people with disabilities in Henniker.

Twenty-nine of the 39 residents at Rush Square participated this year. In the 16 waist-high planting beds constructed by Henniker Rotary, most residents planted flowers and herbs and a few planted vegetables. In the two large raised beds already on the property at Rush Square, the volunteers planted a community vegetable garden. Some residents preferred to plant in the ground around their apartments with plants provided by the Henniker Rotary.
