Hundreds take part in Alzheimer's walk in Canandaigua

Daily Messenger - 10/7/2018

Oct. 07--CANANDAIGUA -- More than 500 participants from the Finger Lakes region joined the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's on Saturday morning in Canandaigua, raising more than $88,000 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs.

"This is our best walk yet. Despite the rain, we had a great turnout and exceeded our fundraising goal. We couldn't have done it without all the volunteers on our planning committee and our generous supporters," said Candace Ryan, chairperson of the 2018 volunteer planning committee and longtime Alzheimer's Association advocate, volunteer and fundraiser. "We would like to thank Alice Berry, Rita Fullerton, Christine Henrichs, Martha Herbik, Patti Horton, Jim Linder and Alice Loncto for their incredible efforts in helping us make the 2018 Finger Lakes Walk to End Alzheimer's a success."

The event brought together individuals who live with Alzheimer's or another dementia, their care partners and friends, and families that lost their loved ones to Alzheimer's or another dementia. Participants spotlighted the disease that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed and raised funds to advance Alzheimer's research.

Participants completed a 1- or a 3-mile walk and learned about Alzheimer's disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support programs and services from the Alzheimer's Association.

More than 400,000 individuals live with Alzheimer's or another dementia and more than 1 million caregivers provide unpaid care to their loved ones in New York.

The Finger Lakes Walk was sponsored by Wegmans (presenting sponsor), Centers Health Care (New York statewide sponsor), WROC-TV and 98.9 The Buzz (media sponsors), and Angels in Your Home, Arnot Health, Bartholomew Healthcare Group, Cognivue, Elderwood, Friendly Senior Living, Jewish Senior Life, Heathwood Assisted Living, Memory Center at Unity, The Village at Unity, St. Ann's Community, St. John's Living and UR Medicine Highland Hospital.

The Rochester Walk to End Alzheimer's will take place Oct. 20 at Frontier Field. Participants can join a team or register to walk at alz.org/walk.
