Commission of Veteran Affairs to hold chili cook-off

Feb. 14--The Jasper County Commission of Veteran Affairs will be hosting its Third Annual Chili Cook-Off at 4 p.m.Feb. 23 to raise money to send supplies and care packages to U.S. troops overseas.

The cost for admission is $5 at the American Legion Post 111, 101 W. Fourth St. S. in Newton, and the fee for interested participants is $25. Prizes for the winning chili recipe include $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, with prizes like a flat-screen TV.

According to VA Commission Chair Marta Ford, the group has upped its goal for this year's cook-off.

"This year, we want to raise $1,000," Ford said during Wednesday's monthly commission meeting. "And get 10 boxes shipped. Last year, we got up to 18 (boxes)."

Veteran Suicide Prevention

Also, during the meeting, Kurt Jackson, Jasper County VA director, said he will be attending a lunch meant to educate about suicide prevention and awareness in the veterans community. The lunch, called VA Suicide Prevent Training Lunch, will take place noon to 1 p.m.April 24, moderated by a Des Moines-based mental health initiative.

The keynote speaker will be Lori Reynolds, Jackson said. He will attend with other area VA commissioners and representatives of local churches. The lunch will take place at the Newton Community School District'sEJH Beard Administration Building.

Finances

Jackson also presented the monthly activity report from January 2019. He has 163 remaining the Vietnam Veteran 50th Commemorative books, had 29 walk-in's requesting assistance, four grave markers and four flag cases distributed, 10 appointments for finding temporary housing and five financial assistance requests.

The allocation funds remaining at this time are $4,554, according to documents provided by the VA commissioners.
