Community Briefs: Shred-a-thon set Saturday, veteran and farmer to speak Monday

April 15--Police holding shred-a-thon today

The Wilson Police Department and N.C. Department of Justice will host a Super Shred-a-Thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15 in the Wilson Mall parking lot.

Residents are invited to shred check stubs, credit card offers, receipts, outdated tax documents and other correspondence with personal information in an effort to protect themselves from identity theft. It is not necessary to remove staples or paperclips from materials to be shredded.

The shred-a-thon will be set up between the K&W Cafeteria and the former Kroger. Shredding is free for individuals and families, but the event is not intended for businesses.

Veteran and farmer to speak Monday

The Wilson County Master Gardeners will present their monthly Garden Talk featuring Robert Elliott of The Veterans Farm at 3 p.m. Monday, April 17. The talk will be held at the Wilson County Agricultural Center, 1806 S. Goldsboro St.

Elliott, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, will share stories about his collaboration with N.C. State University to train armed services veterans for careers in agriculture. Donations to the program will be accepted.

Retired school personnel to meet Wednesday

The Wilson County Retired School Personnel will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19 at the Senior Citizens Center on Goldsboro Street.

Matt Edwards from The SPOT will be the guest speaker. All retired school personnel are invited to attend.

Johnston Dems plan April 20 meeting

SMITHFIELD -- The Johnston County Democratic Men and Democratic Women's clubs will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20 in the fellowship hall of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 Second St.

Jennifer Copeland, executive director of the N.C. Council of Churches, will speak about the group's farmworker ministry. The Democratic clubs will elect new officers for the 2017-19 term.

River cleanup challenge set for April 22

The eighth annual Riverkeeper Cup Cleanup Challenge will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22.

The challenge will focus on land and river cleanups and is a competition among volunteers in Rocky Mount, Louisburg, Tarboro, Greenville and Washington. The community that collects the most trash by weight will win the coveted Riverkeeper Cup.

Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the Battle Park boat ramp in Rocky Mount or Shiloh landing in Tarboro to receive cleanup supplies and assignments. For more information, call 252-467-4960.
