New VFW commander seeks to increase membership

The Spectator - 5/3/2017

SOMERSET — David Aubry, a veteran of the Iraq War, is the new commander of the James L. and John. E. Lynch Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8500 in Somerset.

Aubry, who was a civil engineer in the U.S. Air Force, has been a member of the VFW Post for eight years. He has been the quartermaster for both the post and the district for the VFW. Aubry was also the VFW district commander from 2014 to 2015.

Aubry said he wants to get more active members for the Somerset VFW Post. He said the post is going to need more active members, if it is going to continue, as membership has declined over the years. Aubry said he wants to preserve the history of the post and its members. The Post has 52 members, most of whom are World War II or Korean War veterans.

Aubry said the members of the Post try to do as much as they can to give back to the community. He said they give donations to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In the past, the post has served dinners to veterans who are residents in the Brockton Veterans Administration Center and held essay and poster contests for students in schools in Somerset. A coffee hour for veterans was held at the Post last Friday. The VFW Hall, located at 329 Washington Ave., is also rented out for functions and is used by community groups, like the Lions Club. The VFW Post recently gave a donation to the Wreaths Across America effort that is raising money to put wreaths on the graves of veterans in Somerset.

Donald Truver was the commander of the VFW Post for many years before Aubry recently took over. Truver is still a member.

A campaign medal is needed to join the VFW Post. Those veterans who are interested in a membership can call Aubry at the Post at (508)678-7245 to see if they are eligible to join.
