BRIEF: Student's mission accomplished, and then some

Daily Gazette - 5/10/2017

May 10--OREGON -- Mission 22 became Conner's mission, too.

Oregon High School sophomore Conner Young, 16, spent Saturday morning marching throughout the city, raising money for veterans who battle post traumatic stress disorder.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, 22 veterans with PTSD commit suicide every day.

As part of his Open Program class, in which sophomores choose a community service project, Conner pledged his support to Mission 22, which raises funds to help those vets get treatment.

He resolved to raise at least $3,000 for the nonprofit, by walking 22 miles -- a mile for each vet with PTSD who commits suicide. Saturday, he made good on the promise, completing his march through the town in 6 hours, 45 minutes.

To date, he has raised more than $3,700, he said, and "we still have people donating ... even after the walk."

To donate, go to mission22.networkforgood.com/projects and search for Conner Young, or drop donations off at the Oregon High School office, 210 S. 10th St.
