Selectmen appoint new Veterans Agent

Cohasset Mariner - 3/31/2018

The search is finally over for Cohasset's newest Veterans Services Agent.

Phil Mahoney of 24 Wood Way, who previously served in the Marine Corps for 11 years, was appointed to the position last Tuesday (March 20) by the Board of Selectmen in a unanimous vote. Mahoney has been approved to serve a three-year term.

The position was vacated by Vinny Fountaine, who recently took a full-time position in Rockland. After his departure, the town formed a committee to help determine the best possible candidate for the position.

According to Town Manager Chris Senior, Mahoney was just that man.

"At the end of the day, [the committee] came around to someone who I think would be an outstanding Veterans Service officer for the town in Phil Mahoney," Senior said.

The Board of Selectmen overwhelmingly approved of the selection.

"He is, I think, well-known and well-received by veterans I know in this town, so I am glad to see that [Mahoney] stepped up to this," McCarthy said.

"I've had a long history with [Mahoney] and he is going to be a great Veteran's Service Agent," Selectman Jack Keniley said.

As Veterans Service Agent, Mahoney will lend a hand to Cohasset veterans and their families by helping them in a number of different ways including community involvement, a financial assistance program for those in need, and providing support for them in times of need through a variety of resources. Mahoney, who has lived in Cohasset since the 1960's, said he is quite familiar with the veterans in town and looks forward to.

The Board of Selectmen also appointed Mahoney to the position as the town's Veterans Graves Officer, leaving him in charge of ensuring each veteran's grave is both suitable and well-kept. Despite the large shoes he has to fill, Mahoney said he is honored to hold the position and hopes to have a positive impact on the community.

"It is important to really take care of the folks that are out there serving, and also to identify those who have served and get them involved," Mahoney said.
