WQED documentary will focus on veterans' contributions

Tribune-Review - 11/5/2018

Nov. 05--A new WQED documentary, "...after war," focuses on the success stories of several veterans who are making positive impacts and helping other veterans transition to civilian life by sharing their own strategies.

Since 2001, more than 2.7 million service members have served on 5.4 million deployments across the world. Returning to civilian life after service can be difficult, leaving many veterans homeless, hungry or struggling with mental health issues.

The 30-minute program will include the stories of a married couple who started a boxing club for fellow veterans and first responders, a veteran who discovers the beauty of everyday life through photography and camaraderie, another veteran who found healing through art, and more.

" ...after war" will premiere at 8 p.m.Nov. 8 on WQED-TV.

On Nov. 9, WQED will host a veterans salute breakfast and panel discussion at 9 a.m. at the Community College of Beaver County Dome in Monaca, led by Vietnam War veteran Chris Moore.

Panel members will include Jeb Bolen, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Military Affairs Council of Western Pennsylvania treasurer; Ben Keen, U.S. Army veteran and founder of Steel City Vets; Beth Wiruth, U.S. Army veteran and community college military and veteran student liaison; and Marlon Ferguson, U.S. Navy veteran and executive director of Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard.

WQED also is partnering with Moon Township and Peters Township public libraries to host family-friendly events celebrating and honoring local service members and their families, 1-3 p.m.Nov. 4, and 12-2 p.m.Nov. 10, respectively.
