Gross Towers West fire in Allentown after fire forces temporary evacuation

Morning Call - 4/27/2021

Allentown firefighters partly evacuated an apartment building for seniors and people with disabilities after a fire broke out Monday evening.

Firefighters responded at 5:06 p.m. to Gross Towers West, in the 1300 block of Allen Street, where they evacuated some residents, Allentown fire Capt. John Christopher said. Firefighters were on the roof, according to initial reports.

The fire was extinguished and firefighters began letting residents back into the building by 6:45 p.m.

No details were immediately available on whether anyone was injured, how and where the fire started, or the extent of any damage.

“We hope to have that information from the fire marshal later this evening,” Christopher said.

Firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 8 p.m.

The Allentown Housing Authority oversees Gross Towers, which opened in 1967 and offers housing for low-income senior citizens and people with disabilities.
