Deputy involved shooting kills Polk County man with mental health issues: report

Orlando Sentinel - 12/27/2019

A Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputy and sergeant shot a man with mental health issues after the man reportedly pointed a weapon at them, according to reports.

Deputies responded to a call just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday in reference to a man threatening to kill himself, according to a report by Spectrum News 13.

Juan Rosa, 35 of Aunurndale was reportedly acting combative, which caused his mother to call authorities.

Rosa’s mother told the arriving deputy and sergeant that her son was schizophrenic.

Deputies found Rosa in his bedroom with a gun in hand, Spectrum reported. Rosa ignored deputy’s orders to drop the weapon, which led both the deputy and sergeant to fire at him, Spectrum reported.

Rosa was taken to the hospital where he later died, Spectrum reported.

Both the deputy and the sergeant are on paid administrative leave while four separate independent investigations are underway.
