Where is Adam Hill? SLO County supervisor says he's seeking 'focused treatment'

Tribune - 7/7/2020

Jul. 7--Supervisor Adam Hill says he's seeking "specialized care" for his mental health.

"Persistent, and at times, painfully debilitating depression, has necessitated my seeking more intensive and focused treatment at a residential health program," Hill said in a news release Monday.

Hill has spoke openly about his experiences with depression, which prompted him to step back from his duties and seek treatment in 2018.

In March, a few months into his fourth term as a board supervisor, Hill confirmed that he had attempted suicide and had not attended meetings due to his mental health.

Hill was taken to the hospital March 11, the same day the FBI conducted a search of Hill's office at the San Luis Obispo County Government Center.

He stepped down as chair of the board shortly after his announcement, and District 4 supervisor Lynn Compton has filled the role.

"While I have been working closely with county staff on the many challenging issues our community faces, I have not been able to recover and heal as sufficiently as needed, and chose to seek specialized care at this time," Hill said in the release.

"Many people are suffering right now, and the way forward for all of us, ultimately, is to overcome polarizing and alienating tendencies that fuel suspicion, antagonism, and violence," Hill said. "Our common humanity is injured badly by this, but renewed every time we show compassion and a willingness to understand and respect others."

Hill did not specify where he will be receiving specialized care or how long he anticipates to be away.

However, he said in the release that he is "determined to return soon and in much better health."

In the release, Hill encouraged people whose "own difficulties have impacted (their) mental health" to seek help by calling 800-838-1381 or 800-793-0607. They can also call Hill's office directly at 805-781-4336.
