Berks teen philanthropists award $15,000 in grants to 4 organizations

Reading Eagle - 6/13/2022

Jun. 13—Four local organizations are receiving some financial support thanks to a group of young philanthropists.

The Youth Advisory Board has announced the awarding of $15,000 in grants aimed to address mental health issues among youth.

The advisory board is a program of the Berks County Community Foundation and the Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading that combines lessons about philanthropy and opportunities for service learning and volunteering. The board annually awards grants from the community foundation's Youth and Philanthropy Fund.

For the current year, the 39 members of the advisory board identified mental health as a major concern for students in Berks and awarded the following grants to help address those concerns:

—Immanuel United Church of Christ will receive $5,000 for its music and mental health program, which increases mental health supports for youth through music therapy.

—Bethany Christian Services of Central Pennsylvania will receive $4,030 to provide equine therapy to young people recovering from trauma, anxiety, depression and other conditions.

—Aevidum will receive $3,911 to unite schools across Berks for a countywide launch of a student-driven suicide prevention and mental health support workshop.

—EMPOWERMENT Behavioral Health LLC will receive $2,059 for "Move the Body, Heal the Mind," a trauma treatment program aimed at healing physical symptoms of trauma in youth.

The Youth and Philanthropy Fund was founded in 1998 and has distributed 117 grants totaling $368,258. For more information on the fund visit bccf.org/youth.
