---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a powered exoskeleton orthosis that allows users with spinal cord injury, recovering from stroke, or with other mobility disabilities to walk independently. The Indego is a powered exoskeletal orthosis designed for use by people with lower extremity or mobility disabilities, spinal cord injury, stroke or brain injury, and other conditions that impair a persons ability to walk or stand independently. It fastens around the user's waist and legs, and its modular design allows it to be assembled and dis-assembled for ease of use and transportation. The Indego has a slim profile and no bulky backpack components or footplates so a person wearing it can fit into a wheelchair or car seat. It incorporates functional electrical stimulation (FES) to make the user's legs move. The Indego was invented at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and tested at the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation hospital in Atlanta. It is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but may be available commercially by 2014. WEIGHT: 27 pounds.
