DO IT YOURSELF PURPOSE: To enable individuals with spinal cord injuries or back pain to use a computer in a reclined position. Designed for a touch typist, this system fits under and above a bed, enabling the user to view a monitor and type while reclined. Major components include the frame, a monitor rack and handle to enable the rack to move between the work station and a desk (an optional desk mount is required), an inverted book holder, a mirror for keyboard viewing, and a keyboard mount with a tab to accommodate a clip-on light. The monitor rack, bookholder, mirror, and keyboard holder are height- and angle-adjustable. Complete instructions, with a materials list, computer-aided drawings (CAD), and a photgraphic tour of the system are available from the designer's Web site. MATERIALS: Materials are readily available in local hardware, craft and auto supply stores. A detailed list with measurements and quantities is included on the designer's Web site. TOOLS: Drill press or drill, 3/8-inch steel drill bit, wood drill bits in assorted sizes from 1/8- to 9/32-inch, vise, seven C clamps, saw, pipe cutter, flat rasp file, hammer, and a screwdriver.
