The Symbol Communicator for the Blind, model 4040, is a direct selection symbolic communicator designed for use by individuals who are blind or deaf-blind. On this portable symbolic communicator, messages are identified by removable tactile symbols. To activate a message, the user presses the tactile symbol. At the same time the message is activated, the symbol vibrates, enabling a deaf-blind user to know that the message has been played. Vibration can be turned off. The unit can store six recorded messages on six levels for a total of 36 six-second messages. Messages can be recorded and re-recorded as often as desired. Tactile symbols are a graphic language system using concrete or abstract representations that are both permanent and manipulable and can be tactually discriminated by an individual who is totally blind or deaf-blind. Included is a starting kit of six tactile symbols: Bathroom; Something wrong; Drink; I want; Finished; Eat. POWER: Uses four double-A batteries. DIMENSIONS (HxLxW): 2 x 14 x 10.5 inches.
