The Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS) is an assistive technology assessment system designed for use by researchers in the area of assistive technology outcomes. It includes a 26-item, self-rating questionnaire that is designed to measure a person's perceptions of how assistive devices affect quality of life. The scale describes user experiences along three dimensions: (1) Competence, which measures feelings of competence and usefulness. (2) Adaptability, which signifies a willingness to try new things. (3) Self-esteem, which indicates feelings of emotional well-being and happiness. Scores can range from –3 (maximum negative impact) to +3 (maximum positive impact). The scale can be used to assess the impact of any assistive device, prosthesis, or medical procedure, and can be used with people of all ages and abilities.
