---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of an eye-gaze 3D video gaming device which allows users with mobility disabilities to perform various commands easier and faster. Eye-gaze systems bounce infrared light from LEDs at the bottom of the computer monitor and track an individual’s eye movements using stereo infrared cameras. This new system can calculate where on the screen a user is looking, and has an accuracy of about five millimeters. While including traditional point and click interface, the software for the new gaming device incorporates extra functions to “speed up” certain commands. In order to switch between these different functions the user needs to glance momentarily off-screen in a particular direction. This method allows the user to switch between modes, such as the gamers avatar rotation or different viewpoints. To avoid unintentionally selecting an item while looking at the screen, a “gaze gesture” feature was implemented which temporarily turns off the eye-gaze functions altogether. Eye-gazing systems provide severely disabled children and adults with the means to express themselves and engage with people via the virtual world that they might otherwise not have in real life.
