DO-IT-YOURSELF ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To create a customized jacket for a child with severe disabilities. This particular child gets hot very easily, which can bring on seizures so getting a jacket on and off easily is essential. This custom adaptation takes a regular child’s jacket and opens it up the back. This adaptation is ideal for non-hooded jackets but can be used with hooded jackets as well. First lay the jacket flat and cut a slit up the back from the bottom all the way to the top. Sew a seam down the cut edges so the material doesn’t unravel. Next fold over one side and place a strip of Velcro on the underside (the side that would be again the child). Be sure to use soft Velcro so that if it comes undone and rubs against the child’s skin, it will not scratch. On the opposite side, place a strip of Velcro (scratchy side) on the outside edge of the jacket. This can be done by using one long strip or using several smaller strips. To adhere the Velcro, pin and sew it down. When washing, close the Velcro to maintain its adhere-ability. TITLE: Adapted Jackets. WEBSITE: Adaptions 4 Kidz.
