Handi-Weigh Ramp (Model 285)

The Handi-Weigh Ramp, model 285, is a scale accessory that allows a standard bathroom scale to function as a wheelchair scale. Made from plastic coated steel for rust protection, it fits bathroom scales that measure 30 centimeters or less. The ramp has two joined wheel tracks. It tilts up once it is touched by the front wheels of the wheelchair. The wheelchair is positioned when the front wheels are against the stop bars welded onto the front of each wheel track. The user applies the wheelchair's brakes to hold the wheelchair in place, and the weight is read from the scale. Sometimes it is easier for a caregiver to see the dial from behind the patient by looking under the chair. To determine the patient's weight, either the weight of the wheelchair can be measured previously and then subtracted from the total, or the scale can be set to zero when the empty wheelchair is on it. After weighing, the brakes are released, and the wheelchair can either continue moving forward or it can be reversed to move off the scale.
