The Rainbow Pencil Control Exercises Activity is designed to work fine motor skills in young children, ages Kindergarten to school-aged, and to teach them how to hold a pencil and move it with control and at an age appropriate speed. This activity is good for anyone who is writing with a pencil and trying to form letters on lines, copy written work, fill in worksheets, or take notes. This activity is made with a rainbow of colors to add a visual scanning component.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials: a sheet of blank paper and a rainbow of colored pencils.

Step Two: The parent, caregiver, or teacher should draw different colored circles (1/4 in diameter) on the sheet of paper.

Step Three: Ask the child to fill in the circle with the matching colored pencil. For example, a red circle should be filled in with the red colored pencil. The objective is to fill in the whole circle without going over the lines. This step works on endurance of intrinsic musculature in the hand.

Optional Activities to work on fine motor skills in handwriting:

  • Ask the child to draw an "X" in each circle, without going over the lines.
  • Ask the child to draw horizontal or vertical lines within each circle.
  • Create a color coding activity by matching one circle color with another pencil color. When the parent calls out a color, the child can fill in that colored circle with a different, predetermined colored pencil. This is a test of visual scanning and quick thinking.
  • Draw larger circles and show your child how to fill them in with strait pencil strokes.
