Wood Slice String Art Ornaments is a do it yourself craft for children with fine motor disabilities to engage in fine motor play, to practice fine motor skills, and to encourage creativity.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Small Wood Slices (cut your own or buy at the craft store)
  • Small nails (mine were 3/4 inch long)
  • Thread
  • Small Eye Hooks
  • Ribbon or String

Step Two: Lightly sketch the outline of the desired shape (such as a tree or star) on the wood slice.

Step Three: Lightly mark dots where you want your nails to be. For the star, we chose to mark every angle/point. For the tree, we just spaced the points evenly around a triangle. Note: For some children, the star is too difficult.

Step Four: Using the hammer, tap small nails into the wood slice at each marked point. If the nail goes all the way through, turn it over and pound it back a little from the bottom.

Step Five: Knot a piece of thread around one of the nails. An adult may need to help with this part.

Step Six: Let the child wind the thread around the nails–the crazier the pattern, the better! This part is great for developing fine motor skills!

Step Seven: When finished winding, tie another knot around a nail. Leaving a little extra thread, trim the thread and tuck the excess under the string art. It will blend in nicely. If worried about the knot coming undone, dab a little school glue on it to hold it in place.
