Assisting Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury, 2d ed. (edited by Karen Hux and subtitled “The Role of Speech-Language Pathologists”) is a book written for Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) to prepare them for serving people with an often “hidden disability” who are indistinguishable from non-injured people. The three sections present 1) understanding TBI, including definitions, injury severity, and mechanics; 2) the role of the SLP in discussing major disorders associated with TBI, such as post-traumatic amnesia, cognitive-communication impairments, motor speech disorders, and swallowing disorders; and 3) understanding reintegration that provides guides to relative issues and effective methods of transitioning survivors into family, community, and other settings.
