Mitten Match Number and Fine Motor Skills is a do it yourself activity designed for preschool or kindergarten children to build number sense and work on building their fine motor and visual discrimination skills. These skills are needed when a child starts learning to recognize the different numbers and letters. This mitten matching activity works on identifying numbers and pairing them with the corresponding number of dots.

Directions: Cut felt, craft foam or cardboard to make mittens, using a template. Cut different color mittens, two of each color. These sets can be used for younger kids as a color matching activity, too. Use stickers or labels for the numbers and dots. Then it is not permanent and can be changed, for example, to match upper and lower case letters. Add clothespins to the setup and you are ready to play.

How To Play: Ask the child to attach the number to the corresponding dots: count the dots, identify the correct number and peg together. Using the clothespins to attach the two matching mittens works on fine motor skills.

Ways to Play and Ideas for extending this matching activity:

  1. For older kids use simple sums. For example, one mitten is marked 1+2, another 3. That is the matching pair.
  2. Use as a memory game: turn the mittens upside down and find the pairs like you would do with a memory game.
  3. Use these mittens for number ordering: peg the mittens from 1-10 onto a “washing line” string. Or backwards, to practice counting. backwards.
