The Exercise to Work on a Thumb Wrap Grasp is a do it yourself activity designed for students with dexterity and fine motor disabilities to improve pencil grasp. It is an exercise with play dough that is fun with mini fluted flower beads. This activity is important, because it works the muscles needed to oppose with an open web space and flex the tip of the thumb. This is the mobility needed to advance the pencil fluently. These flower beads are good for this exercise because of the length of the flower that can press into the Play Dough.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Homemade sensory dough or Play dough.
  • Flower beads.

Step Two: Make medium-sized, smooth balls with the Play dough.

Step Three: Have the child press the Flower beads into the Play dough with their thumb, encouraging them to use their thumb in a bent position on the edge of the flowers. They build a flexed thumb IP joint which is needed for an efficient pencil grasp.

Step Four: Next, have the child to pull out all of the flower beads by using the tip of their pointer finger and the tip of the thumb, while ensuring that the child maintains a slightly flexed (bent) thumb IP joint.

Step Five: Encourage learning and playful math by counting as the child pulls out the flowers.
