The DIY: Sidewalk Chalk “Pops” is a do it yourself activity designed for children with upper and lower extremity disabilities to create and participate in physical activities such as hopscotch, tic-tac-toe, toy car racetracks, hangman, bean bag toss, checkers, creative chalk photo props, etc.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Plaster of Paris.
  • Tempera paint (neon works best).
  • Silicone pop mold (muffin tin).
  • Wooden craft sticks.
  • Eight plastic cups.
  • Eight plastic spoons.
    • Cold water (not pictured).
  • Scissors (not pictured).
  • Measuring cups (not pictured).

Step Two: Begin by cutting down the craft sticks to about 3 inches long.

Step Three: Fill each plastic cup with 1/3 cup of cold water.

Step Four: Add 2 Tablespoons of tempera paint to each plastic cup. If the paint set only has six colors, create purple (pink+blue) and aqua (green+blue).

Step Five: Use your plastic spoons to gently stir the water and paint together. Don’t worry if it remains chunky or separated—it will smooth out in the next step.

Step Six: Add 2/3 cup Plaster of Paris to each plastic cup.

Step Seven: Stir until thoroughly combined. Ideally, the mixture will have the consistency of thin yogurt.

Step Eight: Carefully pour the colors into the silicone pop mold (muffin tin). Gently tap the mold on the work surface to release any air bubbles.

Step Nine: After two minutes, the plaster will begin to firm up. Insert the craft sticks (cut side down) into the middle of the chalk “pops.” They should be easy to place without having to push hard or hold them up.

Step Ten: Setting these out in the hot sun is a good way to cure them quickly. After an hour, the user will be able to carefully remove them from the mold.

Step Eleven: Leave them in the sun to continue drying and then, use to play physical games or engage in more craft time.
