DIY Backyard Obstacle Course for a Birthday Party! is a do it yourself activity for children with upper and lower extremity disabilities to participate in gross motor skills activities. For this course, the example is a firefighter-themed birthday party.

Technical Specifications:

Step One:

  • Progress to Station One: Noodle Crawl and Cone Run.
    • The firefighter training course started out with an army crawl under pool noodles. To make the arches, use pool noodles and secure them in an arch shape using tent stakes in the ground. After the children crawl through the noodles, set up small cones for them to run around in a zig-zag pattern. For the firefighter training course, having the children wear an official firefighter uniform adds extra layer of fun.

Step One: To start the course, make a firefighter training course sign, frame it and place near the first obstacle. Depending upon the desired theme, the user can change up the wording as they like.

Step Two:

  • Progress to Station Two: Fire in the Grocery Store.
    • Use a play grocery store, red plastic cups and cut flame shapes out of orange and yellow sticky back vinyl and stick them onto the red plastic cups. Warning—don’t use regular stickers to do this because the kids will be spraying water at the cups to “put out the fire” and regular printer ink will bleed. At this station, the children use a water fire hose backpack to knock down all the red plastic cups.

Step Three:

  • Progress to Station Three: Burning Building Bean Bag Toss.
    • Handmake a burning building, following the instructions below. Go to a FedEx Office and purchase the biggest shipping box they have. Unfold it, and hot glued the sides so it can stand up and look like a building.
    • Next, cut holes for windows in it, and then used self-adhesive brick-print contact paper to cover the building and make it look like a real brick building. Make sure to make your windows large enough for a child to throw a bean bag through.
    • Add flames above each window and a string of some crepe paper flames along the top of the burning building to make it look realistic.

Step Four:

  • Progress to Station Four: Ring Around the Fire Hydrant.
    • Use a small hula hoop/training rings and a life-sized plastic fire hydrant. If the top of the fire hydrant opens, fill the base with rocks so that it won’t tip over so easily.

Step Six:

  • Progress to Station Five: Rescuing a Kitty in a Tree.
    • Use a real ladder (held and stabilized by an adult), and have the children crawl up the fire ladder to make a rescue.
