Raised Bed Garden [for Those With Only Hand Tools] is a do it yourself garden designed for those individuals with upper extremity disabilities to create.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • 4 12-foot untreated 2x6 lumber boards, cut into 8-foot and 4-foot pieces.
  • 8 raised bed pavers.
  • Chicken wire.
  • Newspaper/packing paper.
  • A mix of soil/compost/etc.

Step Two: Layout the Bed. Make a rough layout. Once the user gets the layout in place, start to fit the blocks into the corners and work themself the way up.

Step Three: Layer in Chicken Wire. Before adding soil, consider critters who might want to access the new raised bed by burrowing underneath. With one layer in, roll out the chicken wire and add the second layer to the bed.

Step Four: Build.

  • Tuck the first edge under blocks on one side.
  • Start unrolling the wire.
  • Extend the wire to be slightly longer than the length of the long boards.
  • Cut the wire.
  • Fold back the edge to the midpoint of the second set of blocks.
  • Tuck the second edge under the second blocks.
  • Add on the second layer of blocks.
  • Add on the second layer of boards.

Step Five: Step Back: Re-level Ground.

Step Six: Rebuild. Releveling the bed made the other steps come back together much faster.

Step Seven: Add Paper.

Step Eight: Add Soil.

Step Nine: Layout Plants in Pots. Note: Most plants have recommendations for how the rows or plants should be spaced.

Step Ten: Water and Watch Them Grow.

Step 10: Eat It Up.
