DO IT YOURSELF ENTRYPURPOSE: To enable individuals with spinal cord injury or severe physical disabilities to independently engage in television repair work. A U-shaped work station was designed to allow easy access to tools, parts, catalogs, and equipment. Many tasks can be performed from a centralized sitting area, and a large turntable powered with a rotation lock enables up to four televisions to be placed and independently rotated as needed. Mirrors placed above and below the back of the table allow all television screens to be viewed during diagnostics and repair. Diagnostic equipment is positioned to one side of the turntable and can be moved on an overhead trolley. The equipment can be moved when units are too large to be serviced on the turntable. A magnetic tool caddy sits just below, along with racks and rechargers for power tools. The middle of the work station holds several rotating bins and less frequently used tools. The left side of the unit (for a left-handed user) is for reference materials with several rotating file carousels and a microfiche viewer. A storage area for chemicals was also incorporated. Other features included an ant-static work surface, task lighting, a grasping orthosis for using specific tools, and an elevated tilt-in-space clipboard.
