PictureBraille for Windows is a braille graphics program designed to produce braille graphics for individuals who are blind or have low vision. The software can be used to produce braille graphics maps, floor plans, science diagrams, graphs of equations, or other images. Images are either drawn free-hand on the screen, using the simple drawing program supplied, or scanned from a document such as a textbook or magazine. Once the image is created, the program converts it to a standard braille file. Users can edit the image down to the level of individual braille dots, add braille labels, or fill in selected areas with texture. This software also includes automatic graph and equation plotting tools, which enable the user to enter the data or equation to have the result drawn. The software allows for the importation of the most common Windows graphics file formats, such as BMP, JPG, and GIF, and graphics can be pasted directly into PictureBraille from most drawing programs. Direct scanner support enables material to be scanned directly into the program. The finished braille graphic can be embossed, stored on disk, or or saved in a format compatible with version 10.6 of Duxbury’s Braille translator (see separate entry). This software comes with a computer mouse and a hand-held scanner, can be run on either a desktop or notebook computer, and works with most commercially available embossers.
