Veterans honored by state for their service

The Chronicle - 12/12/2019

Dec. 11--MANSFIELD -- State Rep. Susan Johnson, D- Willimantic, said it is important to not only recognize the impact military service has on those who serve, but on their families as well.

" I really do have an understanding and I have so much pride that my family served," Johnson said, noting members of her family, including her father, grandfather and husband, Dennis O'Brien, served.

Those sentiments were in mind as Johnson and state Sen. Mae Flexer, D- Killingly, presented wartime medals to more than 20 veterans at Mansfield Middle School Tuesday evening.

Flexer said veterans " serve our country in the bravest way possible" and when their service is finished, some continue to serve their country in other ways.

" I'm grateful that so many of you have come here tonight," she said, noting her father, a member of the Marines, served in the Vietnam War.
