Hamilton honoring veterans: Hall of fame to induct 20 more this weekend in second year

Hamilton Journal News - 11/6/2020

Nov. 6--HAMILTON -- For the second straight year, Hamilton will honor local veterans by inducting them into the Hamilton Veterans Hall of Fame.

Last year, 20 veterans and one civilian were inducted and 19 more veterans and one civilian will be inducted during a ceremony Sunday at the Butler County Fairgrounds Event Center.

Several years ago, Chris Haynes, then a VFW state commander, traveled around Ohio and visited some of the veteran halls of fame. He figured it was time for a hall of fame in the county seat.

"We need to recognize those who served our country and those who did a lot of work in their community," said Haynes, 50, a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Gulf War.

Haynes said the hall of fame recognizes the efforts of Hamilton's distinguished men and women wore the uniform and continued to contribute to their community through acts of volunteerism, advocacy, public service, professional distinction and philanthropy.

The program is not intended to focus solely on what Hamilton military members accomplished while in uniform but what has occurred in their lives outside and beyond their military service, he said.

Ken Calihan, an Air Force veteran and HOF committee member, called the induction ceremony "a history lesson of Hamilton. You don't know the influence people had."

Hamilton Mayor Pat Moeller, who also serves on the committee, said the veterans are "truly part of Hamilton's history" and it's important to recognize their achievements and sacrifices.

"This is another way to say 'thank you' to those who served," Moeller said.

Registration has closed for the event and no walk-ins will be accepted, Haynes said.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, social distancing will be required as will masks for those without health issues. Nominations are accepted year around.

The American Legion Post 138 donated $10,000 as seed money to get the hall of fame started for its first few years. A fund has been established at the Hamilton Community Foundation to support the Hamilton Veterans' Hall of Fame.
