Cascade Warbirds to Fly Over Chehalis West for 100th Birthday of D-Day Veteran

The Chronicle - 7/2/2022

Jul. 1—Cascade Warbirds members will be flying their aircraft in a special formation in a salute to D-Day Veteran Robert "Bob" Kabel on his 100th birthday celebration.

The flyover will pass above Chehalis West Assisted Living Center, where Kabel and other veterans reside, between noon and 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 14.

Kabel's birthday party will be held at the Veterans Memorial Museum on July 9.

The Cascade Warbirds will be flying aircraft from five different countries. Two are North American Navions. Others include the Romanian-designed and built IAR 823, Italian-designed and German-built FW149 and Chinese Nanchang CJ-6.

"We are pleased to have so many of our members volunteer in this salute, as a big part of our mission is to honor veterans, and especially one like Bob who participated in the largest amphibious invasion in history," said Squadron Commander John "Smokey" Johnson.

Cascade Warbirds is Squadron #2 of EAA Warbirds of America and is a non-profit organization of local aviation enthusiasts, many of whom are pilot-owners of historic military aircraft.

With over 230 members and the largest squadron in Warbirds of America, Cascade Warbirds is based in the Puget Sound area. Members meet at the Museum of Flight in Seattle from October until flying weather returns in April with a mission to promote and encourage the flying preservation and display of Warbird aircraft, while honoring Veterans and engaging in aviation education.
